Attention all students, parents/guardians !!!You are invited to attend Education for a Better America's Higher Education Awareness and Dropout Prevention Initiative launching on October 27, 2012 at Florida Memorial University in Miami. The event will occur from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The agenda will include a session on selecting a college, admissions processes, entrance exam preparation, pre-college programs, scholarships, financial aid, and skills needed for college. There will be a session aimed at addressing your holistic development including mentoring, community involvement, internships, maximizing the high school experience, and encouraging students to stay in school.
The initiative will feature a Youth Town Hall Meeting that will provide an opportunity for policymakers at the national, state, county, and city level to discuss their youth development policy platform with engaged high school age youth. This organized forum will help elevate solutions by providing a place for concerned individuals to share perspectives on the problems in your community, generate solutions and make policy recommendations to those who wish to represent all of your prospective constituents. Additionally, the program will include a college fair where you will be able to get information on local universities, community colleges, and other post-secondary educational institutions.
The event will be hosted by Lorenzo “Ice Tea” Thomas of 99 Jamz and remarks will be given by Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson among others. Rev. Al Sharpton, Host of MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, will give the keynote address with a career spotlight. A complimentary lunch will be provided for all those who attend and there will be a Greek show and some live entertainment for your enjoyment during lunch. The initiative has already been featured on NBC’s Education Nation (link: http://thegrio.com/2012/09/24/new-education-for-a-better-america-initiative-aims-to-prevent-high-school-dropouts/).
