Organization Next@19th Primary Category Films Extras Temple Israel of Greater Miami with arts-and-culture group Next@19th Street and community organizations will kick off the 16th annual Miami Jewish Film Festival with a special screening of Punk Jews. The film follows an underground Jewish community expressing its identity in unconventional ways, Punk Jews challenges stereotypes and breaks down barriers. From Hassidic punk rockers to Yiddish street performers to African-American Jewish activists, Punk Jews shows an emerging movement in New York City of Jews asserting their Jewish identity, defying the norm, and doing so at any cost. The evening will also include a Next@19th "CHAIku Program: Shifting Jewish Identity," a performance project incorporating original writing in the format of CHAIku - a play on the Hebrew word chai, meaning life, and haiku, a Japanese form of poetry.
