The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, as a Paralympics Sport Club, in conjunction with several of its local Paralympic partners, including the City of Miami Parks, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, CCDH-All Children Together, Shake-A-Leg, and Jackson Memorial Hospital, will present a one-day Paralympic Experience event on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40 St., Miami. As part of the festivities, children and adults with physical and visual disabilities will learn about and engage in adapted sports activities that include kayaking, wheelchair basketball and tennis, tandem biking, hand-cycling, Goalball, horseback-riding, and more. The event, being hosted by the Miami-Dade County Parks Disability Services Division, is open to persons with visual or physical disabilities and their families and admission is free.
“We invite families who have a child with a physical and/or visual disability to come out and experience these thrilling adapted sports activities together,” said Lucy Binhack manager of the Miami-Dade County Parks Disability Services Division. “By inspiring children and adults with disabilities in this way, they are learning how to become more active and social, so they can improve their physical strength and well-being.”
The Miami-Dade County Parks Disability Services division promotes the involvement of persons with disabilities in all Miami-Dade County park services. As both a Paralympic Sports Club and BlazeSports Club they train persons with physical and visual impairments in recreational and competitive adaptive sports. The Miami-Dade County Parks Disability Services Division is among more than 150 Paralympics Sport Club communities across the United States that host Paralympic Experience events.
