BRINGS SOME OF MIAMI'S AND NEW YORK'S MOST EXCITING DANCERS AND CHOREOGRAPHERS TO THE BIG SCREEN
Presented by Indie Film Club Miami and curated by Pioneer Winter, this DANCE ON FILM screening brings some of the most exciting and diverse Miami and New York dancers/choreographies to FILMGATE, South Florida's inaugural interactive film festival. The films range widely in subject and genre: from the refinement of ballet coaching to the intense individuality of club dancing. The 5 programs include peerless international and innovative artists Octavio Campos, Ana Mendez, Gabri Christina, Celia Rowlson-Hall, Marrissa Nick and Pioneer Winter.
Capturing dance on film serves an important role, to preserve the ethereal beauty complexity of a choreographer's .  The films go beyond mere preservation though.  By utilizing cinematic principles of time manipulation, parallel action, editing technique and the reference of the frame, these works of art transcend into a new art form.  Keep in mind, what happens (or doesn't happen) off frame is as important as what happens within it.
Saturday, Feb 2nd at 6PM at O Cinema. Â Free screening. To reserve your seat, register here:
Octavio Campos â PUTANA in colaboration with Ric Delgado and CHOREOVIDEOPutana is part of a larger series titled Please Don't Hate Me! a compilation of transdisciplinary performances and events. Inspired by the hate that rips at the fabric of homes, communities and the world, each performance points to exquisitely artistic, yet provocative, solutions - expressed by a mash up of Miami-centric dance theater productions and site-specific performance installations.Celia Rowlson-Hall â UNTO THE LOCUSTSAn interpretive film that blends Rowlson-Hallâs love of dance, fashion and film. Created in chapters, more installments to the narrative piece focus on highlighting the individual talents of dancers. Fashion is also a prevalent element with the fascination how fabrics drape and fall as the subjects twirl and slither.Ana Mendez â  UNTITLED in collaboration with Federico Nessi This film follows a series of actions in a deck of cards, picked at random, creating a sequence of nonsensical behavior inspired by Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies" for composing music. The aim is to animate the concept of the traditional family portrait using mundane actions juxtaposed by turbulent undertones that suggest all that is veiled in a portrait.Marissa Nick â SHINE A LIGHT ON MY BLUE SOULA film that expresses an audiovisual metaphor for a confused, heavy soul. The blue feeling suggests the seduction of self-induced suffering.
Gabri Christa â QUARANTINE: ANOTHER BUILDING #1An older man looks at his younger self explore an old Quarantine Building for enslaved Africans. Pioneer Winter - AMY Appropriation and parody of the song "Dancing On My Own" by pop artist Robyn. Performers in the video, including lead Amy Von Harrington (LegalArt/Cannonball visiting artist March 2012) were participants in a Body Movement for Non-Dancers workshop given weekly at LegalArt in Miami by Pioneer Winter.  Â
