Chefs reveal the most overpriced items on the menu

According to restaurant owners and chefs, certain foods on the menu are a waste of money and are strategically priced to fool customers.

Thrillist.com shared its list of the most overpriced items at restaurants, and some may come as a surprise.

The first item is Kobe beef. This meat is supposedly made in Japan from cows that get daily pampering treatments. But some chefs say restaurants are serving “American-style ‘Kobe,’ calling it Japanese Kobe and charging $35 an ounce for it,” Thrillist reports. “Restaurants are basically using the term to mean ‘add eight dollars.’ ”

The second on the list is the popular spicy tuna roll. It may seem like the tuna should be at the forefront of this dish, but in reality the rolls are “made with leftover parts and disguised with the spicy sauce,” a restaurant owner told Thrillist.

Fried calamari also made the list because customers mostly pay “for pure breading,” according to Thrillist.

Another item is lobster mac and cheese. You may think the meat is straight from the claws and tails, but “you’re getting all the scraps from the body shells,” a restaurant owner said to Thrillist.

Other items on the list include bottled water, chicken dishes over $25, well liquor, mezze platters, Champagne, truffles and oysters.
