Miami, FL 33143
The South Miami Branch Library is within walking distance of the South Miami Metrorail station, the Red Road/Sunset Drive business district, and residential communities. Located next door to the South Miami City Hall and Police Department, this 11,500 square-foot library serves a diverse population which includes commuters traveling to and from downtown Miami. The branch library was founded in 1960 by the City of Miami and was incorporated into the Dade County System in 1966.Using Decade of Progress bond money, the current building was constructed in 1978 next door to its old location, a single room, coral rock landmark called the Sylva Martin Building. Beautifully designed by architect Wray Succop, there are tall windows dividing the inside areas of the library. This provides spaces that are both pleasing to the eye as well as functional for children and adults. A ceramic mural entitled "Where Memories Remain", created by artist Susan Felz and funded by Art in Public Places, is incorporated into the Northern exterior wall facing Sunset Drive.South Miami Library has a well-rounded collection of materials for patrons of all ages. There are computer terminals allowing access to educational software as well as the Internet. After 24 years serving its local community in its current building, the South Miami Branch Library has just completed an extensive remodeling. Lobby walls were painted, a new air conditioning system has been installed and the ducts were cleaned. All tables at the library have been replaced with new beautiful wood tables that can accommodate someone in a wheelchair. Two large curbside book drops were placed facing the parking for convenient 24-hour drop-off of library materials. Carpeting and furniture compliment the adult area where the walls were painted with purple and green color tones. The children’s room received new furniture, carpeting and shelving and a new bathroom was built to bring the library to ADA compliance. The walls in the children’s area sport shades of green and purple tones.Map to Location
