Massiah Browne was swimming at a Sacramento apartment complex when he saw a child in distress.

“I was just playing in the pool, and then I saw a boy at the bottom of the pool,” Massiah told ABC News. “And I went to go get him.”

“You never hear about a 7-year-old saving a 3-year-old, so it was very shocking,” Tiara Delvalle, Massiah’s mother, told WNYW.

The 3-year-old was at the bottom of the pool in an area that was 6 feet deep, ABC News reported. When Massiah got the child to the surface of the water, he and his 9-year-old relative, Savannah, pulled the toddler onto the pool deck.

Adults who had CPR training rushed to help, and the toddler was breathing normally by the time he reached the hospital, KXTV reported.

Delvalle told ABC News that she is in touch with the toddler’s mother, who said the child is doing well.

“It’s a miracle,” Delvalle told ABC News.

Delvalle told WNYW that Massiah loves the water and has taken swim lessons since he was a young boy.

In the United States, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, with 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
