ANKARA, Turkey — A woman in Turkey believed to be 116 years old has recovered after being infected with COVID-19, becoming one of the oldest patients to survive the virus.
Ayse Karatay was moved to a regular ward at a hospital after getting sick and testing positive for the coronavirus last month, Turkish news agency Demiroren reported.
“My mother fell ill at the age of 116 and stayed in the intensive care unit for three weeks. ... Her health is very good now and she’s getting better,” son Ibrahim Karatay said.
Ayse said she had only received one shot of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine. She believes she was infected by a family member. Ayse was born during the Ottoman Empire, when exact birth dates were not recorded.
She is not the only ultracentarian to recover from COVID-19.
In February, French nun Sister Andre, the world’s second-oldest living person, recovered from COVID-19 days before her 117th birthday.
