Total novel coronavirus cases in the United States eclipsed 24 million Monday, bringing January’s case count to date to 4 million, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.
The United States’ 24,034,373 cumulative cases reported Monday afternoon represent one-quarter of the more than 95 million global cases. Meanwhile, virus-related deaths nationwide continued to creep steadily toward 400,000, representing roughly 20% of the slightly more than 2 million global COVID-19 fatalities recorded to date.
Per the latest figures, California became the first state to surpass 3 million cases Monday, which have resulted in nearly 34,000 deaths; Texas has confirmed roughly 2.1 million cumulative cases, resulting in nearly 33,000 deaths; Florida has confirmed nearly 1.6 million cases, resulting in more than 24,000 deaths; New York has confirmed nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 41,000 deaths; and Illinois has confirmed nearly 1.1 million cases, resulting in more than 20,000 deaths.
Ten other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona, New Jersey, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, another 13 states have reported fewer than half a million cases but more than 300,000 cases, including Massachusetts, Missouri, Minnesota, Virginia, Alabama, South Carolina, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Maryland, Kentucky, Utah and Iowa.
