Coronavirus: US death toll tops 400,000

The United States passed another grim milestone Tuesday when the number of deaths associated with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic topped 400,000, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 400,022 people nationwide have died of coronavirus-related causes. The news comes 36 days after the U.S. death toll topped 300,000. The numbers mean an average of about 2,770 people died of coronavirus-related causes each day since Dec. 15.

The U.S. death toll remains the world’s highest, accounting for nearly 20% of the more than 2 million deaths reported globally.

The U.S. has reported the most COVID-19 cases in the world. More than 24.1 million people have contracted COVID-19 since the virus was first detected in the U.S. early last year, according to Johns Hopkins. The numbers include more than 1 million cases in five states: 3 million in California, 2.1 million in Texas, 1.5 million in Florida, 1.2 million in New York and more than 1 million in Illinois.

Officials in India have reported the second-highest number of infections and the third-highest number of deaths. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 10.5 million coronavirus infections have been reported across India, causing over 152,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins.

The third-highest number of COVID-19 cases was reported in Brazil, where 8.5 million have fallen ill. The country has the second-highest coronavirus-related death toll, with over 210,000 killed by the virus.

President-elect Joe Biden, who is set to be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday, has vowed to vaccinate 100 million Americans in his first 100 days in office.
