Crash involving NYC police vehicle injures 10 people

NEW YORK — Ten people were injured Thursday when a police cruiser in New York City was involved in an accident and jumped a curb, authorities said.

Eight civilians and two police officers were injured in the incident in the Bronx, WPIX-TV reported. Six of the victims were taken to area hospitals and two declined treatment, according to WABC-TV. Their conditions were unknown.

According to a New York Police Department spokesperson, an NYPD cruiser was responding to a call of larceny in the Bronx at about 3 p.m. EDT, WABC reported. With traffic backed up the officers inside the vehicle put their lights and sirens on and attempted to maneuver around the backed-up vehicles, according to the television station.

When the cruiser attempted to go through the intersection of Westchester and Hoe avenues, it was hit by an oncoming vehicle after the light turned green, WABC reported.

The force of the crash sent the cruiser onto the sidewalk, according to the television station.

Police have not released any other information.
