Total COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 40 million on Monday, fueled by a continued surge in infections attributed primarily to the unchecked spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus.

By 3:21 p.m. EDT Monday, U.S. COVID-19 cases totaled 40,003,101, and the nationwide death toll totaled 648,935, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

The latest figures mean that the most recent 1 million cases were reported within the past six days, after three consecutive seven-day cycles. During the nation’s winter peak, the U.S. averaged 1 million new cases every four days, according to Johns Hopkins data.

India has recorded the second-highest nationwide cases with 33,027,621, resulting in nearly 440,752 deaths, while Brazil has confirmed 20,890,779 cases and 583,628 COVID-19 fatalities, according to the Johns Hopkins tally.

To date, 13 U.S. states have confirmed at least 1 million COVID-19 cases each, including:

• California: More than 4.4 million cases, resulting in more than 66,000 deaths.
• Texas: More than 3.7 million cases, resulting in more than 58,000 deaths.
• Florida: More than 3.3 million cases, resulting in more than 46,000 deaths.
• New York: More than 2.3 million cases, resulting in more than 54,000 deaths.
• Illinois: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 27,000 deaths.
• Georgia: More than 1.4 million cases, resulting in more than 23,000 deaths.
• Pennsylvania: More than 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 28,000 deaths.
• Ohio: More than 1.25 million cases, resulting in nearly 21,000 deaths.
• North Carolina: More than 1.23 million cases, resulting in nearly 15,000 deaths.
• New Jersey: More than 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 27,000 deaths.
• Tennessee: More than 1 million cases, resulting in nearly 14,000 deaths.
• Michigan: Nearly 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 22,000 deaths.
• Arizona: More than 1 million cases, resulting in nearly 19,000 deaths.

Fourteen other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Indiana, Virginia, Missouri, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Alabama, Louisiana, Minnesota, Colorado, Kentucky, Washington, Oklahoma and Maryland. Meanwhile, another 11 states have reported fewer than half a million cases but more than 200,000 cases, including Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Iowa, Nevada, Kansas, Connecticut, Oregon, Nebraska, New Mexico and Idaho.
