Louisiana toddler accidentally shoots, kills himself while playing with gun, police say

BAKER, La. — A Louisiana toddler has died after he accidentally shot himself while playing with a gun in his Baker home, police said.

According to The Advocate and The Associated Press, the incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. at a residence on Breckenridge Drive. Baker police said the 3-year-old victim discovered a semiautomatic pistol and pulled the trigger, accidentally killing himself.

Authorities said at least two other children and the boy’s father, who was preparing lunch in another room, were home when the incident occurred, The Advocate reported. Police questioned the father but have not charged him with any crimes, according to the AP.

Baker police Chief Carl Dunn called the shooting “a tragic accident,” the news outlets reported. He also urged firearm owners to take proper precautions, such as using gun locks, to keep children safe, according to The Advocate.
