Spiked: VP Mike Pence left off some ballots in Michigan

Mike Pence got “spiked” from some Michigan ballots Tuesday.

Because of a “temporary error” in a state database, the vice president was omitted from ballots for registered voters who live abroad or serve in the military, the Detroit Free Press reported. According to the newspaper, the ballot correctly named Donald Trump as the Republican presidential candidate but listed his vice-presidential candidate as Jeremy “Spike” Cohen, who is the Libertarian Party’s candidate for the No. 2 spot.

It was a “temporary error” that was fixed within 90 minutes Tuesday, Tracy Wimmer, a spokesperson for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, told the Free Press.

“Approximately 400 ballots were downloaded by clerks during this period; we don’t know how many were sent,” Wimmer told the newspaper.

Clerks were told to issue correct ballots and inform voters to ignore the incorrect ballot if they received one.

“If a voter does happen to return the incorrect ballot instead of the correct ballot, it will still count," Wimmer told the Free Press. “The clerk will be instructed to duplicate a vote for Trump onto a ballot for Trump/Pence.”

Earlier Tuesday, Benson’s office announced it would begin sending absentee ballots to overseas and military voters on Saturday, the newspaper reported. Absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, when the polls close, in order to be valid.

Susan Nash, the city clerk in Livonia, said her office did not download any of the incorrect ballots, but conceded such a mistake was embarrassing.

“I think it’s embarrassing. As a clerk, you’d be embarrassed that you sent out the wrong ballot,” Nash told the Free Press. “It’s just one more thing for clerks to take care of.”
